How to Apply for a Security Guard Card Registration?

To become a security guard in California, you must be employed by a licensed Private Patrol Operator or private security employer. Security guards protect people and property and prevent theft as defined in Business and Professions Code (BPC) Section 7582.1.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Age: Must be at least 18 years old (BPC Section 7582.8).
• Background Check: Complete a criminal history background check through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) (BPC Sections 7581 and 7583.9).
• Training: Successfully complete the Power to Arrest training (see Training Requirements below).

How Do I Check the Status of My Security Guard Registration “Guard Card” Application?

To check the status of your Guard Card application or verify if your license has been approved or updated (in the case of an expired license), follow these steps:

Step 1: Go to the CA State Breeze License Search Page.

Step 2: Enter your license number or personal information as required.

Step 3: View the status of your application or license.

How Do I Create an Account with BreEZe?

Creating an account with BreEZe, the online system for managing California state licenses, is simple. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Visit the CA State Department of Consumer Affairs website.

Step 2: On the home page, click on the link that says “New Users – Breeze Registration” located on the lower right side of the page.

Step 3: Follow the prompts to complete your registration and submit your online CA State Security Guard Application.

Training Requirements

To obtain your Security Guard Registration (Guard Card), you must complete the following:

• Power to Arrest Training: This must be completed prior to the issuance of the Guard Card (BPC Sections 7583.6 and 7583.8).
• Advanced Training: Complete 32 hours of security officer skills training within the first six months of registration.
• Continuing Education: Complete 8 hours of continuing education annually (BPC 7583.6 and California Code of Regulations (CCR) Section 643).
